The Actuarial Club is a student-run organization for those interested or majoring in actuarial science. A career in actuarial science utilizes a person’s knowledge of math, economics, finance and risk theory in the business world. Our members range in age from freshmen to graduate students. We encourage interaction among students, faculty, and industry professionals in the actuarial field.
The UW Actuarial Club strives to:
- Provide members with a better understanding of the actuarial field
- Create the opportunity to build relationships among actuarial students and faculty
- Encourage relationships between students and actuarial professionals
- Expose students to professional applications of actuarial science
- Provide resources for students taking actuarial exams
- Engage in positive community volunteer work
Club activities include:
- Company Presentations
- Every semester the actuarial club invites business representatives from a variety of companies to come and present on topics relating to the actuarial field. Speakers have discussed life and health insurance, property and casualty insurance, and benefit consulting. These presentations give students a more in-depth perspective of actuarial science. The Career Fair held in the fall allows students to talk with companies about summer internships and full-time opportunities.
- Social Events
- Interaction among club members is a key focus of the Actuarial Club. Throughout the year members are able to share experiences, exchange advice, gain information on actuarial coursework, exams, and classes, and form lasting friendships. Social events have included intramural sports, an annual spring golf outing, away-game football parties, and picnics.
- Preparation for Actuarial Exams and Internships
- The Society of Actuaries TM and the Casualty Actuarial Society TM administer a series of professional examinations of actuarial concepts. Completion of the exams allows one to become credentialed in one of the actuarial societies. The club assists students in sitting for these exams by connecting students with resources such as review classes and study groups. The Club reimburses members who pass their exams each sitting. The Club also facilitates meetings on the kinds of actuarial internships available, creating a resume, and a meeting with tips on interviewing.
