Tuesday, December 13th

Learn more complex functions in Excel including lookup function and pivot tables. All you need is a basic knowledge of Excel. This is a great event to tell employers you did in interviews.

Melissa, Chad and Justin will discuss predictive modeling. Predictive modeling is becoming ingrained in many of the elements of insurance company operations. It is currently part of the pricing, underwriting and claims processes and insurers are looking for ways to expand its applications beyond these areas. A case study will involve determining which variables have predictive powers, and will focus on the P&C industry.

Dan Bach of Towers Perrin will examine the current state of affairs of defined benefit pension plans and consider how actuaries might play a role in this issue down the road. We will look at how individual employees are affected when an underfunded pension plan is terminated and how the government takes over the plan (i.e.,the airline industry today, the steel industry in the mid '80s, etc....)
