Milliman Presentation Grainger Hall, Rm 1295 Thursday, April 23rd, 6:00PM The current economic crisis had its origin in the residential mortgage market, which has certainly suffered severe stress in the last couple years. What started as a subprime mortgage problem quickly evolved into a broad mortgage crisis with waves of losses in Alt-A (a cousin of subprime) and even prime loans. This "real world stress test" has inflicted severe pain on many institutions that hold assets tied to these markets including general insurers and particularly life insurance companies. These assets include mortgage backed securities (MBSs), asset backed securities (ABSs), and collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). Rising defaults and declining house prices have led to downgrades by the rating agencies and the illiquidity of many of these securities. In such an environment, many have called into question the severly impaired market values of these securites as reasonable accounting values and as measures on intrinsic value. 20

Health Insurance premiums have outpaced wage inflation for too long that it is now unsustainable. Also called economic required capital, it is the amount of capital necessary to cover losses at a given risk tolerance over a specific time horizon. It is called "economic" because it measures risk in terms of true market realities rather than potentially misleading regulatory or accounting rules. EC provides a standarized risk measure that management can use for multiple purposes: risk management, internal capital management, pricing, performance measurement, risk-based decision making, and rating agency influence. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. 20
